After day one of the annual matchplay event between our club (with a few guests) and our friends from Isaan, matchplay pairs, the score was very tight but in favour of Chiang Mai, by 12 1/2 to 11 1/2 points. Eight pairs matches took place, with excellent victories for Harry & Truus, Kim Gillies and Tony Guardino, Yung & Bob (guest), Roger & Malcolm, and also points picked up in drawn matches/ narrow defeats by Les, Phil, Dan and David Hub. Unfortunately our "star players", the low handicap guys, came up against some very tough opposition. Grahame Curry shot 81 off the stick yet his pairing incredibly lost 6 & 4 against a pairing in which one of the opponents shot 76 including five birdies!! Tough golf!!
After a more social second day scramble, the sixteen singles matches which will decide the overall result, take place on Wednesday. Let's hope we can reverse our fortunes of previous years when we have mostly been pipped at the post after the singles day! Malcolm reports that everyone is enjoying the experience of playing new courses in a good but very friendly competitive environment and that the hosts are looking after us very well. Harry and Truus in particular are doing very well on the nearest the pin prizes. Don't think they will have space in the car for all the prizes they have won!!
